I have operated a homelab for several years now, using it as a base from which to develop skills with using/maintaining enterprise grade networking and server equipment. The itch got me after I was asked to maintain a cluster at Heriot-Watt University while I was doing my Masters. I already had skills in using Linux-based systems and the various software packages for them, but this new challenge pushed me to learn a lot more. I setup a homelab to help me in this journey, and have maintained it ever since.
